Johann and Maria Catherine came from Drees, a village in the Eifel Mountains of Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Different family trees list different combinations of children, and I think that’s because some were German-born and others were US-born. While still in Germany, Maria gave birth to Bernhard (b. 1846), Elizabeth, Christian, Anton, and Anna Katherine (Gerhartz) * (b. 1851).
They migrated to the US in the early 1850s, settling in Johnsburg, Fond du Lac County, WI. Their family continued to grow, with the American children John (b. 1854), Mary Ann (Wirth), Mary Katherine (Mauer), and Anna (Lefeber) (b. 1862).
They are buried in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. The church dates to 1857, so this building was surely central to their community for decades. Their land was a mile south of the church.
The 1862 map below shows the church and cemetery (marked with an X and a cross, top center) and the two square miles immediately to the south. The names “J.P. Stephany” and “J. Stephany” appear in the middle of this map, showing the exact location of the family’s land. Note that it’s right next to the Schmitz land. J. Stephany must have been a sibling or cousin of J.P; I don’t know this person’s identity.
