Hans and Elen lived on Sandver Island and are presumably buried on Lurøy. They were born into the mini-empire of Denmark-Norway, which had been stable since 1660. During their lifetime, Scandinavia got caught up in the Napoleonic Wars and other nationalistic campaigns, including the Swedish-Norwegian War. By 1814, Norway was a semi-autonomous province of the United Kingdom of Sweden and Norway. Norway had its own constitution and parliament, but it ultimately answered to the Swedish throne. This was the mini-empire from which all of our ancestors immigrated; none of them ever lived in an independent Norway.
