Isaac and Matilda met and married in Scott County, Indiana. Their three children were Elizabeth* (1822), Zebulon, and William (1826). This was a Methodist family.

Matilda died young, and I am currently trying to pinpoint just when and where. William, her youngest child, was born 10/05/1826. Then Isaac, her husband, remarried on 6/10/1827. That narrows Matilda’s death to an eight-month window of time. ¹

At the time of Matilda’s death, the family was in the process of relocating from Scott County, Indiana to Fulton County, Illinois. Here’s a timeline:

• Isaac’s first IL land deed, in 1825, identifies him as from Lexington, Scott County, IN ²
• Isaac and Matilda’s last child, William, was born 10/05/1826 in Indiana. ³
• Matilda died some time between Oct. 1826 and June 1827.
• Isaac remarried Ruth Ann Mills-Murray on 6/10/1827 in Illinois, at a relative’s home. ⁴.
• A January, 1828 land deed identifies Isaac as a resident of Fulton County, IL. ⁵
• Isaac and Ruth Ann’s first child, Mariah, was born in 1828 in “IN (or IL)”. ⁶
• To confuse the matter, Isaac has a son named Horace born in Illinois in this time period, and there is some confusion about when and to whom Horace was born. Some records say that he was born to Matilda in Feb., 1827. However, better evidence indicates that he was born in Feb., 1829 to Ruth Ann. ⁷

I have performed a pretty exhaustive search of cemeteries in Fulton County, IL, and find no record of Matilda there (or for any white settlers before 1835). I am led to conclude that Matilda most likely died in Scott County, IN and never moved to IL. There is strong Foster presence in Jefferson County, IN as well, so it is feasible that Matilda could be buried anywhere in Scott County or Jefferson County.

Isaac’s second wife was Ruth Ann Mills-Murray. It was her second marriage too. They settled in Fulton County, IL, where Isaac had purchased land in Joshua and Canton Townships. Their children were Mariah (1828), Horace, Hugh, Mary Ann (Hill), twins Martha Ann (Day) and Sarah Jane (Hendryx), Edward Albert, Nancy Catherine, Thomas Lewis, and Phoebe Caroline (1849). We have a very faint picture of Sarah Jane’s family, shown below.

Isaac and Ruth Ann are buried at Providence Chapel Cemetery in Farmington, IL.
